Visit My MosqueWhat to expect

Visiting a mosque โ€” what to expect

Everyone is welcome. Here's what a Visit My Mosque open day is like, so you can come along with confidence.

New to this? A Visit My Mosque open day is a relaxed, friendly chance to look around, ask questions, and meet your neighbours over a cup of tea. You don't need to know anything about Islam โ€” just bring your curiosity. It's part of husn al-jiwฤr, the Islamic value of being a good neighbour.

Do I need to book?

Usually no โ€” most mosques welcome you to just turn up on the day. A few may ask you to let them know you're coming, which will be noted on their listing.

Am I welcome if I'm not Muslim?

Absolutely โ€” that's the whole point. Visit My Mosque is an invitation to neighbours of all faiths and none.

What should I wear?

Modest, comfortable clothing covering the shoulders and knees. You'll take your shoes off in prayer areas, so easy shoes (and tidy socks!) help. Women may wish to bring a headscarf โ€” it's usually optional for visitors, and the mosque will gently guide you.

Can I bring my children / family?

Yes โ€” families are very welcome, and many mosques put on activities for children.

Is it free?

Yes, completely free. Many mosques also offer tea, snacks or a light meal.

Can I take photos?

Usually yes โ€” but please ask first, especially during prayers or of individuals.

Will I have to take part in prayer?

No. You may be invited to observe a short prayer if one happens while you're there โ€” you're welcome to watch respectfully, and never obliged to join in.

Is the building accessible?

Accessibility varies between mosques. Many have step-free access and separate facilities for women. If you have specific needs, contact the mosque ahead of your visit.

Can I ask questions?

Please do โ€” mosques love questions, and that's what the day is for. You can also ask our assistant anything, any time.
